Shuowen (Echo) Shen (she/her) is an MFA candidate in Dramaturgy at Columbia University. She graduated with honors from Wesleyan University, majoring in East Asian Studies and Theater with a minor in Social, Cultural, and Critical Theory.

She has experience in publishing and curatorial work at cultural institutions, serving as a freelance rights editor at Thinkingdom Media Group, where she focuses on multilingual storytelling and bringing international works to domestic audiences. She has worked on the foreign rights promotion and licensing of authors including Yu Hua and Wang Xiaobo. She is also a curatorial assistant at CiLENS, a Berlin-based nonprofit film curation collective dedicated to exploring cinema as a space for transcultural dialogue through the showcasing of independent Sinophone films.

Deeply interested in the space and time that performance can create, especially within experimental and site-specific theater, her work centers on East Asian diasporic narratives and memory, with an emphasis on the relationship between space and language. She believes in the playfulness of theater-making and, broadening her practice, is also eager to expand her work into art installations, especially those centered on sound and non-visual forms of storytelling. Her dramaturgical interests lie in projects that are not text-driven but instead emerge from oral storytelling, movement, and ethnographic research.

Recent projects include her debut as writer-director with About Past Lives, Packing Tips, and Black Cats, co-director of A Fable for Now (North American premiere), I’m Gonna Stop Pretending (That I Didn’t Break Your Heart) and dramaturg for Night on the Galactic Railroad and Wolfcrush.
