BAKKHAI
By Euripides
A new version by Anne Carson
BAKKHAI is an ancient Greek story about partying when god tells you to and just how bad things can get if you say no. In this reimagining of BAKKHAI, Anne Carson draws from Euripides’ original to stage a collision between ancient ritual and the fractured rhythms of a hyper-mediated present. Set in a world on the edge—saturated with screens, speed, and desire—the production channels the raw force of those who no longer fit the frame. The Bakkhai emerge not as symbols, but as symptoms: of a culture stretched too thin, of bodies pushed too far, of spirits searching for rupture. Their presence doesn’t resolve; it fractures, disturbs, and demands a reckoning with what has been buried beneath control.
